I was reading the rules and it said that the entry draft positions are done by a draft lottery, thats not how things are done in the OHL, or anywhere for that matter besides the NHL. Just thought it should be said, as the way the OHL draft works is much better for everyone.

I am not sure how the OHL draft goes, but i know the QMJHL draft is not done by a lottery. The worst two teams have a lottery for first and second place, and then the rest of the league picks in order of where they finish.

I guess we should kick this one around. We can go with no lottery. My fear is that in a sim league - there may be more of a chance that an owner that is low in the standings could just tank a team to get that top pick. Since we're not concerned with fans, press or getting fired - its an obvious tactic that could be used. A lottery would eliminate any hope of giving up.
I'm curious to see what everyone else thinks. I don't mind either way.

That's the thing with Junior teams. Every team rebuilds, and in order to rebuild, you have to sell off your talent to load up on draft picks and young players. Most junior teams only have a dynasty for 3-4 years tops and then have to rebuild for a few years and then have another dynasty for 3-4 years then rebuild. It's a circle that all smart junior teams go through.
Even if a GM tanks it, and sells everything off, and then quits the league...the new GM coming into that team is in a great position...he gets to rebuild his team into what he wants it to be.
When i took over the Storm...the entire team was 19 years old...not one player younger than that...and they had no chance of winning the Cup...and i didn't want to be screwed in the off season to lose all but 3 of them...so I did what any sane person would do...went into re-build mode and traded most of them away for youth and draft picks. Look at my team now...Young and competitive instead of old and useless.
I've done some research and can't seem to find anything stating that the real OHL uses a random selection. I have a little bit of an issue with doing it randomly...a strong team, say someone who finishes in first place wins the lottery...then they get first pick overall and already have a strong team...just making the rich richer. Also, for teams that look to trade 1st rounders away...it makes a trade more promising to trade the 1st round pick of a crappy team away than the first round pick of a strong team.
In any case...I think we should go by standings and not a lottery draft...but that's just my two cents.

Andy, your team is strong because I gave you some quality youth! ;D Jerry, not to sound like a kiss-ass, but i agree to whatever you decide because I know you're only going to do what is best for this league .

The OHL definitely does not do lottery selection. The draft order is based on season standings at end of season.

No lottery draft then. I will update the rules shortly.
Any ideas for the timing of the draft. I would really like to see us do it in the spring, before we get into summer holidays and rerates. So maybe right after the league finals or memorial cup (ours not the real ones.)?
That way we could take our time. I would also like to see GMs have the option of picking for all 15 rounds. I know last year we stopped after 5 and players were assigned. But those willing to do their homework should be allowed to draft who they want to the end. Others can opt-out after the 5th round and have players assigned...
Ideas anyone??

I would love to do a full 15 round draft, as long as there is a good way to do it, I'd also like to do a live draft but as most know it is nearly impossible.

We can't do the draft until after the real OHL priority selection happens because that is the list of people we can draft from.
Also, if we did all 15 rounds, we would have to have the entire CHL on board with this...or at least close to it...or at least get the CHL commish's seal of approval as he is trying to have as much consistency in the leagues as possible.

It's true OHL in real life has no Draft Lottery, but i think in any fantasy league you almost have to have a Draft Lottery because otherwise you'll get tanking for the sake of tanking.
