This thread is for the discussion of general manager participation.
I guess we can start with trying to give a percentage of general manager participation in your league.
Would you say 50% of you general managers try to improve their team for the current season or the future or manage their lines?
If we find the percentage is lower or higher, what can we do to improve it?

Well I know I can speak for the OHL sim league, and the participation I think is probably hovering around 50%. There are multiple teams who haven't uploaded lines for the longest time. One team hasn't since 8-26-08, and the other still shows as 00-00-00 which is a cause for concern.
As for ways to improve it, I think Jerry (OHL Commish) had the right idea with making it a requirement to upload lines 2 times a week to the site. As well, it should be a responsibility of GM's around the league that if they see instances where lines are not uploaded, or GM's not signing in, they should be reporting this as the lack of participaton hurts everyone.

I know the QMJHL commish (Andrew) was thinking of making once a week update to the lines a requirement as well.
I think if we do make it a requirement, once a week should be enough.

Hey,
I think that once a week is enough to update lines...some people might think once a week is too much...but people have to realize...if there is a roster problem, the Commishes might bot be able to simulate that night's games. I know that at least 15 of the 18 teams in the QMJHL league are active...as for the other three...they are active...just haven't uploaded their lines and if they don't buy the deadline, they will be removed and replaced with someone who will participate.

I think uploading lines 1 per week, and a bit of message board participation is more than fair.

I'm very active in the Q league... but I think once a week is too much... I don't even do it that much!
I set my lines for the 10 games in the sim... and then only update within those 10 games if there is an injury or if I make a trade.
I don't see the point in uploading the same lines if I still have 5 or 6 games out of the 10 and don't want to change anything.
Just my opinion though... I will do whatever is asked of me to stay in the league...

I have a very good team in the Q so I'm not on the site every day trying to make deals this season. Like Eric, I set my lines for 10 games and I only edit them when I get e-mails saying that someone was hurt. So once a week is much if all is going well with the team. So I agree with Eric. Now... here some food for thought. About two/three weeks ago I added a feature that sends emails to any team with invalid lines when we upload the TRANSACTIONS.XML file. I could build a tracker in the web portal that would report how many times a email is sent in a row to a general manager. As soon as they upload their new lines, the tracker is reset to 0. So if we see on the report page that "Team A" as five emails in a row to fix their lines and they have yet to upload them, then there is a problem. What do y'all think of that.

We just started a new rule....compromised a bit...as I even thought once a week may be a little demanding, I had originally suggested once a month.
We went with a GM having to log on to the site at least once a week and updating lines once every two weeks. The rule just went into effect and I have 4 GMs that have until this Friday to update lines, else they will be replaced. We can always tighten the rules if we have to, down the road.
What I do is issue a warning to the GM that his lines are over-due, or that he hasn't been on-site lately. His team then goes on a 'probation list' and if there is another violation, within 3 months than he is immediately removed from the league - no questions asked.
If he goes 3 months and stays involved then his name is removed from the probation list. The list is public and posted in the OHL message board and is completely public and transparent. It also shows the GMs that I, as the commish, am trying to monitor league activity and provide a league full of active, involved GMs.
I check for participation once a week, so a GM that is warned has 7 days to update his info, else he will be booted, as he'll already be on probation.

I like the idea of once a week or even once every two weeks for lines. Me, I have been in rebuilding mode for my team in the dub, so I change it up all the time, but there are guys who haven't for a while. There needs to a median though, and forum iinvolvment. I think forum involvment is key to a great league.
